Client Vision and Design Goals
Our client, residing in a repurposed warehouse in Balikpapan’s vibrant district, is known for her daring use of color and distinctive style. She engaged us to redesign her kitchen and bathroom, refresh the mezzanine with new shelving, and add decorative elements such as wallpaper and lighting throughout. Key features included Tom Dixon lighting, vibrant flamingo wallpaper, a functional library ladder, and a striking copper bathtub. We started with a blue and black resin dish to inspire the color scheme.
Kitchen Redesign: Balikpapan Style
The kitchen design began with the bold choice of ‘Peacock Blue’ paired with Tom Dixon ‘Melt’ lights. These lights were a fresh trend in Balikpapan. We considered the apartment’s heritage and industrial style while selecting our colors. Switching to a galley kitchen layout allowed us to meet the client’s need for more storage, additional counter space, and wall ovens, all while showcasing the original iron column.
To highlight the high ceilings and iron beams, we used ‘Peacock Blue’ for the mezzanine shelving. The vibrant flamingo wallpaper and tile backsplash brought lively color to the kitchen, continuing the theme from the entrance.
Creating a Bathroom Oasis in Balikpapan
In the bathroom, we aimed to create an aquatic retreat. With a copper bathtub as the focal point, blue tiles were selected to evoke an underwater ambiance. The tiles’ varying shades add movement and interest. Given the bathroom’s lack of natural light, we used strategic lighting and mirrors to make the space feel larger and more inviting. Carefully positioned mirrors enhance functionality and aesthetics. Additionally, a large, backlit round mirror adds depth, while copper pendant lights tie in with the copper bathtub.
